Arsenal FC Blog Promotion

Calling all Australian Arsenal supporters

No news to speak of today so I thought I’d set you, the regular readers of the Arsenal FC Blog with a little homework task.

For those that aren’t aware - and I’m sure there are quite a few of you - despite being an Arsenal supporter I am a born and bred Australian who resides in Brisbane. See for yourself. The reason for telling you this is that I am very interested in promoting the community of Arsenal supporters in Australia through this very blog.

There are a undoubtedly a lot of great Arsenal blogs on the internet - Arseblog, Gunnerblog, Goodplaya, The Cannon, A Cultured Left Foot to name just a few - but to my knowledge the Arsenal FC Blog is the only blog from Australia that is consistently updated and has a reasonable readership.

Taking this into account I see quite a good opportunity to use this blog to promote the Arsenal community in Australia. For those that aren’t aware, there is an official Arsenal Australia community that does a similar thing, but this is still in it’s relevant infancy and their website does not have the facility to comment on daily news and opinions the way this blog provides.

Essentially my idea is to get Arsenal supporters in Australia communicating between themselves and with me to such an extent that I can facilitate events on Arsenal game nights at various pubs around the country. This would allow die-hard supporters to get together and share a beer and a cheer at Arsenal pubs late into the night (when games are played here) as well as providing venues for English travellers to follow Arsenal while they are away from home.

Arseblogger does this quite successfully with supporters from Ireland and although I don’t pretend to have the same readership and influence as he does I still feel the potential is there to build something special within the Arsenal community down under.

However, before I pursue this idea further I wanted to get some feedback from any readers of the blog who live in Australia. Basically I’d first like to know how many of you there are, where you’re from and whether you would be open to the idea of promoting some sort of Arsenal communities at various pubs around the country.

If you’re an Australian reader I’d urge you to leave a comment from this post and let me know what you think. If you’re from England or anywhere else in the world and you’re planning on travelling down under at some time in the future I’d also encourage you to let me know what you think.

While I’m at it would also be great to hear from any other regular readers of the blog around the world. Let me know where you’re all from so that we can all get to know a little bit more about each other. I know it all sounds a bit warm and fuzzy but at the end of the day I feel it could well be a good idea.

Cheers in advance.

Let me know where you’re from and what you think of the idea by leaving a comment.

  9. Arsenal Australia have a forum on their site. Within this forum, there are sections for each state. Most states are meeting up and discuss this on the forum.

  10. @ Melbourne Gooner - Cheers. I’ve previously contacted Arsenal Australia to try and link up and have had some problem with the membership situation. I very much want to go through both the forums and here to create as big a following as possible.

  11. Panda Bear likes Spanish Fry’s idea for Arsenal fans in Democratic Australia to enjoy the wonders of Arsenal in a good environment like Panda Bear in his Bamboo Enclosure with other friends. If Panda Bear travels to Australia he will be sure to stand side by side Arsenal brothers in the Inferior creature and strange unstrument Bar. That is all.

  14. Sydney here. Top blog Spanish Fry came across it through some random links a while back and it soon came into my regular Arsenal blog list :p

It is nice to hear about the team through an Australian perspective, regardless if its a different or relatively same opinion on various matters. Top work mate.

  16. Such a great idea. I was not looking forward to the prospect of moving to Australia and not being able to watch the games with other fans. I’m moving to the south east coast in Victoria. If you can keep me updated on where to watch the matches that would be wicked! Cheers

I am moving back in November to Melbourne and the thing I will miss the most is going to watch the Gunners live. Even just live on TV. So I am very interested in getting toghther and watching games with fellow Gooners. I also plan on spreading the word.

  46. I live in North London but I’d just like to say that I think what you’re doing is fantastic Spanish. Building up a community and watching games together is the best thing a blog can accomplish. Bringing people together in a group with a common binary ingredient - a love for the Arsenal. I hope your efforts are a success.

  49. Good luck with your idea SF. I’m a gunners fan in the United States up in the Seattle area. I just recently spied an English Pub in the area where I went for the Champions League final but I still haven’t found one that plays live EPL games. Pubs in the States don’t seem to keen on opening up at nine o’clock in the morning. Must be Spud fans.

  50. G’day, g’day

I’m Singaporean by birth, but I currently live in Melbourne and am now a citizen. I’ve been supporting Arsenal for as long as I care to remember. I love this idea of a network within Australia! It seems football is not given enough attention as AFL (uggh), Rugby (it’s all right), and Cricket (nuff said).

    Posted by Josh | May 27, 2008, 8:41 pm
  51. My name is Fernando Guilherme.I have supported Arsenal for well over 40 years but have only seen the gunners play 4 live games. How i enjoyed the euro final althought we were beaten by the spanish.By the way i live in Johannesburg,South Africa

  54. You’ve broken my heart enough times not being around when Im at the P&W, Spanish Fry ;). Nice dig at my not updating, but eh. I can have no complaints, heh.

Im all for getting an Arsenal ‘fraternity’ going down under. Im getting tired of having to go with Liverpool fans to enjoy atmosphere while the odd sprinkling (read: one or two, including myself) Arsenal fans quietly sit and drink coke.

  56. Thanks for your responses everyone. I absolutely appreciate it. I will be in contact with Arsenal Australia to get something sorted out before the start of next season.

@ Jammathon - No offence meant at all - I promise you. And I’ve probably been there at the same time as you and not known it, as you say there is generally only a sprinkling of Arsenal supporters compared with the Liverpool/Man United fans at the Brisbane Pig ‘n’ Whistle.

    To the future.

  62. If you were at the Arsenal/Chelsea game in December, or the second leg of the Champs League against ‘Pool, Im the one who rants and raves hysterically. I danced on my own up front when Gallas scored against Chelsea. On my own! The shame of it all.

    Posted by Jammathon | May 28, 2008, 11:25 am
  63. I know jammathon what you mean as I was yelling at the tv in canberra casino when dudu got his leg broke and got told to calm down as I was putting everyone off their game of blackjack.

    Posted by butterfingers | May 28, 2008, 2:50 pm
  64. @ Jammathon - I think I saw you at the Pig man. Were you there on the Sunday night when Arsenal lost 2-1 to Manchester United. There was one berk there who sang all the songs for Arsenal against about a thousand Manchester supporters. Ultimate respect if it was you haha.

  68. i’m from malaysia, currently studying in melbourne. and seriously, i’m a huge huge huge fan of arsenal. watched their game since i was as little as 10 (and back then, epl wasn’t even famous in asia !). they were the first team i watched on tv, and fell in love immediately with their football. 3 years without a trophy would still not stop me from supporting arsenal. i like the idea of mad arsenal fans getting together and watch how we turn on the style, how football should really be played. watching arsenal play in a champions league final would be great :)

it’s great to here there are many arsenal fans here in australia and i think it’s a great idea what u’re suggesting here. good on ya mate !
