Nasri surely set to replace Hleb at Arsenal

With the official confirmation on Saturday that Alexandr Hleb will be leaving Arsenal and the almost official confirmation on Sunday that Samir Nasri will be joining the club, it’s been quite an interesting weekend for Arsenal supporters.

I could go on and on about how much I think Hleb’s agent has acted like a twat over this whole saga or how disappointed I am that the Belarussian has left the club for such a trivial reason as ‘needing a change of scene’, but if that is his attitude then I’d rather he go then stay. I think he had an excellent season just gone for Arsenal but as so many people have pointed out he just has not posed enough of a goal threat to be considered a success in his three years at the club, a shame for such a talented player.

I had previously hoped that Nasri would be brought in as an extra option to rotate with Hleb in the hole but with the Belarussian’s exit it seems the Frenchman may be set for an even bigger role. With Wenger stating that he expects the deal to be done before the start of Euro 2008 there will doubtless be many Arsenal supporters keeping an eye on how Nasri performs for France during the tournament. It will be interesting to see how he fairs.

For those that can’t wait that long I’ve included a nice compilation video of Nasri in action.

Anyway, that’s about that. I’ll have more on Hleb leaving or Nasri joining when it is made 100% official but in the meantime I’d love to hear your thoughts on either issue. As always you can do so by leaving a comment.

Cheers.

Have your say on Hleb or Nasri by leaving a comment.

very nice article mate. I don’t really understand the situation with pleb, bit of a strange one. But if we could have had both i would have loved it. Then again nasri or pleb? Bit of a hard one.

I think Nasri is the only solution for arsenal as per now. He is more tactical than Helb. Let Helb go and lest he gives his side of view.

I thought rotating Hleb and Nasri next season would have been excellent, it’s a shame that the former had to leave.

I’m sick of the way agents go about their business though, it’s infuriating for supporters to watch.

If he does join Arsenal, he would certainly be our best 1v1 player in the outfield. VP is our best 1v1 striker of cuz.

Don’t know who has better technique. But Nasri seems to have more pace.

And yes, he is better than Helb. As Helb used to be our best dribbler, Nasri has the same close dribbling skills + 1 or 2 more little tricks. Nasri dribble seems very balanced which is always a good sign of good fundamental skills. Nasri also seems more offensive when he is with the ball, may be because he is faster than helb.

Lets get serious abt the transfers now.. with vela back, i highly doubr wenger will be signing ben arfa.. unless bendtner leaves.. even then, it’s unlikely as wenger has always said walcott is striker material.

apart fm nasri, wenger will buy a replacement for flamini and a defender (center back)…and if ppl are thinkin that wenger will go for a expensive player, think again… all those rumours abt the 2 french players frm st. whatever might jst me true

Would rather Helb stay and I am not sure if nasri is going to fill his boot perfectlt. But to be honest, its much better to replace a player who don’t want to play for us with a hungry expereince youngster. When u smile u always win, love that!

let hleb go, woulnt want 2 c him in our shirt without his committment. I have seen S.N. he looks good, i’d give him the No. 10 right away.

a lot of players are leaving the arsenal. so , a hard and famous players should be substituted in place of the players already left.if arsene wenger has done this,in the near future ,i’m sure , the diginity of the club will come again.

nasri deal must have been done already as i cant see wenger talking so openly obout his sinings incase it starts a bidding war with every other club because we alreaddy know they try to steal wengers targets

hleb is leaving for good. He only knows dribbling and his shot selection is not any better than eboue. Hope nasri can deliver us titles

Hleb should just leave ..it’s good ridance i have ta say its amazing that with these guyz we have not won anything the whole season and yet we claim and rate them highly yet remember we didn’t win zilch trophies…Its better we lose some a dem and we replace dem with even better players who have a hunger to achieve and to shoot more at goal….Hleb a think is more suited for Madrid thats where show boating and holding on to the ball and slowing down counter attacks is allowed. Am so excited abt the new look Arsenal …Vela, Nasri, Walcott, V.Persie the future does luk bright at Arsenal …a time is coming when Arsenal will massacre every team that stands in its way.

@ Adarsh – I don’t think Vela returning will influence the Ben Arfa signing at all. Wenger has already said that he intends to play Vela up front and with Eduardo out for at least half the season (I’d say a full season mentally) I suspect that’s where he will play.

I still think we need an attacking winger. Nasri will replace Hleb and that still leaves us where we started. Additionally a defensive midfielder (someone like Makoun) and a centre-back are the must-buys.

We shouldn’t forget what Hleb has done. Just because he is leaving doesn’t mean he is a rubbish player. I can’t see Nasri being as good a dribbler as Hleb is – he is absolutely amazing – but if he’s more dangerous in the final third then he will be an adequate replacement. Perhaps even an improvement.

It is a shame if Hleb decides to leave. However, when you have a supposedly attacking winger who only scores two prem. goals all season it is a bit of a worry. If our right wing had been knocking them in then it would have been fine – but Eboue didn’t hit the back of the net once. So yeah a shame for him to go but maybe for the best. Not sure what Mr.Wenger has up his sleeve – If Nasri is a replacement for Hleb then we still need another midfielder to replace Flamini before we are back to where we were before. He said we will make two or three big signings but surely he meant to stengthen our squad not just to replace those who leave….if that is the case we need at least four signings. Maybe Vela counts as one. But all in all still very optimistic about next season. I feel as a team we will improve the most due to our youthful outlook – Lets get oursleves 90 points and hope it is enough!

    @ spanish fry

come to think of it, wenger mey buy ben arfa.. but i don’t think he is going to buy 4 players in one transfer window… we knw wenger better than tht.. so, if he does buy ben arfa… forget abt gettin a flamini replacement as he’ll jst play diaby, denilson or gilberto in tht spot… i think we have cover enogu, even though it is not very good.. wenger trusts denilson and diaby because if he did not, he would have let them hang around for 1st team positions for son long..

Nasri will be brilliant if we sign him, hleb was a great player but didn’t do the business when it came to scoring.
I think nasri may go on to be better than hleb.
A defensive midfielder and a centre back are the priorities but ben arfa would be another great addition to midfield.

I’d really like to see us sign Ben Arfa as well but I seriously doubt it will happen. More likely than not we’re going to get Nasri, Chantome and a center back.

From what I hear Chantome looked very Flaminiesque in his performance for PSG in the French Cup. I didn’t see him but I hear his work rate and timely tackles were through the roof.

Nasir looks excellent especially in the final third. He’s a finished product and not one of those that require 3 years+.He looks like the kind of player who’ll bring back the fast-paced counter-attacking/quick breaks that arsenal was known for when Pires,Henry,Lungberg,Vieira etc were at their best.Am sure he can score atleast 10-13 goals in a season which would have been sufficient to earn us the title in 2007-8.Toure may just step into Flamini’s position if indeed its true that the manager is looking for a CB but let’s wait and see.We cannot afford any more slip ups; our competitors are going to strengthen their squads too

HLEB IS ASKILLFUL PLAYER BUT LAKED THE HERT FIGHT FOR CAUSE AND DO WHAT EVER TAKES FOR THE TEAM. PEOPLE ARE SAYING WAS BROUGHT IN SCORE GOALS, BUTR NIETHER WAS GALLAS A DENENDER AND HE HAS SCORD MORE GOALS THAN HLEB. NASRI HAS MORE SKILLS THAN HLEB PLUS HE HAS THE ABILITY TO PLAY MORE DIRECT AND ATTACK THE FLANKS AND SCORE GOALS. I STLL FEEL WE SHOULD BRING ANOTHER STRIKER BEACUSE EDWARDO IS GOING OUT UNTIL DECEMBER AND EVON THOUGH VELA IS COMMING IT WILL TAKE HIM TO ADAMT TO PREM. BUT ARE DEFENCE IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT AND WENGER WILL TAKE HIS AND LOOK HOLDING MIDFIEDER AND STRONG DEFENDER AND WE WILL NEEED A GOAL KEEPER. IN ALL I FEEL WE NNED BRING IN AROUND FIVE OR SIX PLAYERS.BECAUSE WE NEED TO REPLACE THE PLAYERS WE HAVE LOST PLUS WE NEED TO ADD TO THE SQUAD.

  23. Spanish Fry
    May 26, 2008 at 8:47 pm #

@ Leon – I think we’re OK for strikers. Bendtner is ready for a full season as a first-choice back-up. Adebayor and can be rotated and van Persie and Vela can be rotated and if there is injuries I think the quality is there to handle it. If you bring in a fifth striker you risk congestion when Eduardo does finally return and that is not good from a long-term perspective.

  24. Spanish Fry
    May 26, 2008 at 8:48 pm #

Also, I think three more players still need to be signed. Centre-back, defensive midfielder and a winger. That’s not to say Wenger isn’t in control though – I’m sure they will come when everything is sorted. No need to panic.

WENGER SHOULD SELL HOYTE BEACUSE HE NOT GOING GET IN THE FIRST TEAM AND WE DENFENDERS THAT WILL BE GO INTO FIRST. I WOULD ALSO SELL ABOUE , I DONT KNOWWHERE IS GOING TO PLAY HE CANT DEFEND VERY WELL HE CANT PLAY ON WING EITHER, I WOULD GIVE DIABI ONE MORE SEASEON AND DOESNT IMPROVE I WOULD SELL HIM. I FEEL WE NEED EXPERIENE BIG PHSYCAL HOLDING MIDFIELDER THAT CAN PLAY DEFENCE AN ESSIAN TYPE PLAYER, IWOULD BUY DEFENDERS LIKE THAT WHO GO INTO FIRST TEAM WHEN NEEDED. UPFRONT WE CAN SCORE THERE NOT REALY ALOT OF NEEDED TO DONE THERE THIS SEASON I FEEL WILCOT WAS OVER PROTECTED SHOULD PLAYED HIL ALOT MORE WE HAVE SCORED MORE AND RISISKY WAS HEALTHY WE WOULD HAVE WON THE PREMBECAUSE HE WILL SCORE 10-15 GOALS AND WITH NASRI WE WILL BE FINE

It a weicoming development.i tink hleb is a good player but nasir is going to be better with his scoring record and great skill on the ball,so if hleb insist on living he should be free, but it will be nice to have both talents.

nasri looks like a good player but i think if hleb goes we need another player like diego or robinho or david silva.that would be a direct replacement or someone similar to them.hleb is a talented player but doesn’t score enough anyway so he is replaceable just as is flamini. i say get rid of eboue and thats really it and get a centre back in. my choice would be martin laursen but a realistic one would be albiol, marchena or thuram. if adebayor goes then get david villa or mario gomez. guiza or santa cruz are ok but prefer the other two. then we can challenge for every trophey for sure!!!! but thats alot of hard work to get these type of players.

I guess I disagree with those of you slating Hleb. i will be sorry to see him go and think rotating would have been good. Nasri will need time to adjust, and Hleb has tended to fade late in the year. Hleb did not score, but he could unlock defenses like nobody’s business. His dribbling skills were unreal and his understanding with Cesc telepathic. Everytime he touched the ball I expected something incredible to happen. Had he gotten the penalty against the Pool in the first leg Cl match we would have gone through; had he gotten some of the clear penalties he deserved in the league (Birmingham comes to mind) we might have won the league. It is a shame that he will not stick around to win the league and maybe Cl with his mates Cesc and co. next year. He is leaving a job almost finished.

ehemmm.. a word of wisdom from Man Utd fan.. hehehe…

in my opinion, nasri is better in term of shooting and scoring, he dribble with pace, but Hleb is better with ball control.. nasri is not goin to make an immediate impact.. if he got wiser, he can be a very good asset.. i’ve been following his video long before his link with Arsenal. And my comment is, he is too raw and too much individual. He’s like Walcott, 3 seasons ago… dribble and dribble without end product.

i think wenger will find replacement laymen, flamini, and hleb but in addtion he will bring in aother two three players. i feel we need a another 2 players upfront just as cover, but i feel we need experiened defenders.it will be deficult to find defender around 6,2 very physical that can play as a holding midfielder. i think he will bring in around two defenders but would sell hoyte and aboue but i dont thats going happen i dont think wenger is not letting players go now.
