Ozil’s contract talks takes a new twist

By Felix Law.

According to Goal.com, Arsenal run the risk of losing star player Mesut Ozil who is hesitant on signing a new contract as his current contract expires in the summer 2018. The former Werder Bremen midfielder was signed from Real Madrid in 2013 for £42 million making him the most expensive player in the club’s history till date.

Ozil is stalling on signing an extension at the North London club even though the club have put forward a contract that will make him the highest paid player at the club. The German international’s reason for  refusing to extend his contract is mainly due to the fact that current manager Arsene Wenger appears unlikely to remain at the club beyond the end of the season as his current contract expires in the summer. Wenger on his part has ignored calls by the club and fans to extend his contract instead keeping his decision until the end of the season.

Ozil is reluctant  to extend his contract beyond 2018 and then see Wenger leave in the summer which might count against him considering the new manager might not be able to get the best off him like Wenger has done since his signing in 2013. This season, he has been impressive scoring a hat-trick for the first time in his career against Bulgarian champions Ludogorets on the night in a 6-0 win for the North London side.

The German has thrived as a result of his being played in his favourite No 10 position which was initially the position for Alexis Sanchez last season. Ozil has already scored six goals this season in all competitions which is only two behind the eight he scored last season.

Reports have it that Ozil’s decision to wait on his contract extension isn’t financially motivated rather entirely based on footballing reasons pending when Wenger extends. In a bid to fasten issues like this, Arsenal are reportedly losing their patience as they club want to tie down their stars as quickly as possible rather than lose them on the cheap later on, as per Goal.
