The official word on Cesc Fabregas’ injury

Please note that I will have a full match report of Arsenal vs Aston Villa in tomorrow’s post.

* * *

Arsenal completed a brilliant 3-0 victory over Aston Villa* on Sunday afternoon as Cesc Fabregas emerged from the bench to score the opening two goals.

Unfortunately in the 50-yard dash to finish off the second goal he aggravated the hamstring injury that prevented him from starting the match, leaving Arsene Wenger and the rest of the club with an anxious wait to see the extent of his problem.

The official word from the manager is that the extent of Cesc’s injury is still very much up in the air:

“We don’t know yet whether it is a recurrence of the pull or whether it is just scar tissue. We will know more about it tomorrow [Monday]. If it is scar tissue it is a few days, if it is a recurrence of the pulled hamstring it is three weeks.”

My gut feeling is that it was only a tweak and he’ll be back soon enough. Despite clearly feeling some pain he appeared to be moving fairly in the time between the goal and his substitution which suggests it is not a big problem. You don’t need me to tell you that I’m not a doctor, however.

Let’s hope for good news later today. You’ll hear it as soon as I do.

20 odd minutes of Master Class football from Cesc. We were definitely on the front foot before he came on, but the surge in our attack once he made his way onto the pitch…it was like someone just turned a switch. Fair play to Villa for a nice match, but they had nothing in the way of dealing with us hitting high second/low third gear while Cesc was running the middle.

Give Cesc a good few days off…we should be able to get by Portsmouth without him, but I do hope it’s just a minor tweak. As you said, Andy, he looked to be getting around decently before he came off, but clearly there was something tweaked. If it had been worse, I think he would have been in much worse shape.

Hope that the injury to Cesc is not that serious, because the team needs him now more than any other time.

What a player!!!! Kaka and Messy combined can not mean to their team what Fabergas is to us.

    I salute the little master.

Critique… Ashravin needs to get fit – and do a little more work – and try to stay on his feet when the ball is in his possession. He is often caught in possesion only to lose the ball that the midfield works so hard to retain.

i thought diaby had a good game……..but arshavin was looking rather soft……..we do need a muscular presence up top…..but i think wenger will not buy and rely on bendner who is two or three games away…..we hav to beat porthsmouth……..win the game in hand ………go above man u ……….then hopefuly move to the top of the table……..i really feel this is the year we will win something

Yeah my gut feeling is also the same in that it is only minor. Id say if he is out for 14-21 days for a minor hamstring strain, then that is ok as i think we can get over Pompey, West Ham and Bolton without him and then he can return in time for the big games after that!

Sorry I havent blogged in quite a while but now seems as good time as any to restarts. As arsenal fans we must be happy at this moment in time. We sit third with a game in hand which if won would propel us to second. Chelsea , the league leaders keep faltering, other teams around us are also dropping points and best of all we keep winning. Villa was a very hard game and it needed that extra spark to win it and that extra spark was the 21 min cameo appearance of Cesc. He doesnt make many cameo appearances for us but he always leaves his mark. Our skipper was just outstanding on the pitch even for a short time. I do hope its not a bad injury and only needs a couple of days to heal cuz with RvP out for the whole season, we need Cesc a whole lot more. With the form Diaby is on he can fill the void for Fabregas and we have Deni, Song, Ramsey, Nasri, Wilshere and Merida who can all fill in. Thats enough quality to get past pompey. So hopefully after that he can come back and bang in the goals like he has been doing and come May lift the Premiership title. we have a superb chance lads!!!!! Up The Arse!

Also what is the trophy that readers of the arsenal fc blog want to win most this season. For me it is the Premier League but after 4 seasons without one, i wont be too fussy 🙂

@ jay-jay – It’s the Premier League for me too. To win this year’s competition – a much tighter and more even affair than the last few – in the current financial situation would be extremely satisfying.

Thank you, Andrew, the comments text size is better now. Personally I’d like it to be just a tad darker too, the grey’s a bit too soft for me…but you know…whatever.

The Gunners were excellent against Villa. They really stepped up for what was a difficult match and ultimately we dominated (as The Great Man said) against an in-form team that was full of confidence. 3-0 is their biggest loss of the season – puts it in perspective. Fab was immense. On fire. What about that celebration after his free kick??? But I actually felt confident we’d win anyway because we seemed so in control. Not that I’m sorry Fab came on – we witnessed a special moment there chaps.

And Diaby…so The Great Man knows more about football than I do after all! THAT’s what he saw in him that I never could. If he keeps playing like that we’ve got a new secret weapon in the team. He slalams through defenders. keeps the ball really well. Has great control. Can score! Fantastic performance in this match. I was wrong I was wrong I was wrong.

I think Arsene will buy a striker on loan, maybe Huntelaar. And for the midfielder i think he’s going for RVV
